Swimming, kickball, and arts and crafts are delightful images of summer camp. Soggy sandwiches, mushy fruit and tepid drinks: not so much.
With camp season right around the corner, now is a good time to start thinking about summer camp lunch ideas. Sadly, the challenges of packing a summer camp lunch are many. There is the usual concern with providing a healthy meal that won’t end up in the trash. Steering clear of any allergens, your child’s or those of fellow campers, is a must. And any items you pack need to withstand scorching summer temperatures, since many day camps don’t have access to refrigeration.
It may seem a bit daunting, but it is definitely possible to pack a delicious, healthy midday meal for your camper that holds up in the summer heat. Here are some tips
- Don’t forget an insulated bag and an ice pack…or two. Placing your lunch container in the fridge beforehand is another way to keep things cool.
- Pasta salad with veggies, cut-up veggies with hummus and veggie sushi rolls are all great healthy options that hold up well in the summer heat.
- Try high protein items to keep kids energized throughout their active camp day. Some great options include yogurt (especially Greek yogurt), rolled up deli meat, hard-boiled eggs, tortilla chips and bean dip, and sliced cheese and crackers.
- Find out any rules your child’s camp may have regarding acceptable foods. If peanut butter is not permitted, PB & J sandwiches get booted from the lunch rotation!
